THE LIMES CICERONES OF THE GERMAN LIMES COMMISSION®
In 2005, the Upper German-Raetian Limes was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Together with Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall (from 2008) in Great Britain, the Upper German-Raetian Limes is part of the transnational Serial World Heritage Site "Frontiers of the Roman Empire".
The size, diversity and complexity of this World Heritage Site mean that there is an increased need to inform visitors and local residents. Regarding the area of the Upper German-Raetian Limes, this task has so far been carried out by specialised guides, the so-called "Limes Cicerones". They consider themselves to be ambassadors for the Limes, the World Heritage concept and their region. A number of the Limes Cicerones have been members of the Association of Limes Cicerones e. V. since 2005. (Here you will find an overview of the contact details of the Limes Cicerones in your region).
In order to ensure that the Upper German-Raetian Limes, its associated Roman history and culture, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Site are presented competently and professionally, regardless of location, the German Limes Commission - represented by the administrative office - supervises the training and further education of tour guides.
With this in mind, a standardised training and further education programme has been introduced as the "Limes Cicerones of the German Limes Commission", the specialised content of which is determined by the members of the commission on a transnational basis. Special attention is given to the teaching of the basic history of the Roman provinces, the monument conservation requirements for the World Heritage Site and the methods of educational work. After successful training and examination, all participants receive a certificate recognising them as trained tour guides for the Limes.
A detailed list of the training content can be found in the Examination Regulations and on our new website for the Limes Cicerones. Read more about the history, current developments and prospects for tour guides here.
