INTERSECTION MARKINGS FOR ROADS AND PATHS

Clearly placed markers at the intersections of roads and paths along the Limes line are among the simple but effective measures used to visualise the course of the Limes. With this approach, the spatial location of the Limes is conveyed while simultaneously drawing attention to the monument. The marker elements can be placed on both sides of federal, state, district and municipal roads or other ancillary routes. The road traffic regulations and the relevant legal provisions must be observed.

Significance for Monument Preservation

In addition to their relevance to tourism, the markings represent a sustainable approach to monument awareness. They contribute to the understanding of the monument through its visualisation whilst preserving the course of the Limes aboveground. This is the basis of the project's relevance regarding monument preservation.

Cross-state Recommendation by the German Limes Commission

In 2009, the German Limes Commission decided to introduce a standardised system of markers in all four federal states. The choice was made in favour of a stone stele with the inscription LIMES. This standardised marker variant can already be found along numerous roads in both Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. It was further decided that where there existed legal limitations to the erection of a stone stele in reasonable proximity to the Limes that a metal signpost should therefore mark the course of the Limes in these areas. This decision of a standardised system of marking is the result of experience which has shown a high degree of confusion and irritation on behalf of the visitor when numerous conflicting regional solutions are applied. Such confusion diminishes the recognition value of the monument. In this respect, the recommended standardised layout of information boards by the German Limes Commission across all federal states is exemplary. This guideline especially applies to any new crossings which are in need of markers. Existing intersection markings retain their function, but if they are to be replaced or renewed, the standardised markings should be implemented in accordance with the guidelines set out here
