MOBILE APPLICATIONS FOR THE LIMES WORLD HERITAGE SITE
LIMES mobil
The App LIMES mobil – World Heritage in your Pocket
The Limes, which is often just rubble and stones, is in many cases only recognisable in the terrain to the trained eye. And this is supposed to be a World Heritage Site? The free “Limes Mobile” App provides information about the Raetian Limes helping to make the World Heritage Site visible to everyone. The Roman provincial border comes to life with the “Limes Mobil” App (for iOS and Android): moveable (interactive) 3D scans transports spectacular museum artefacts back to their original locations and allow them to be experienced up close where they were found. Virtual reconstructions, short films, and audio information allows the user to immerse themselves in the world of the Limes from 2000 years ago. With the app, we invite you to discover the unseen world heritage of the Limes directly on site or from the comfort of your sofa at home.
LIMES mobil – How to use
The Limes offers many things, but there is usually no WiFi on site. Therefore, please download the data packages prior to your excursion either at home, in the museum, or in the café. Then you no longer need an internet connection on site. With the GPS function of your smartphone, the app points out interesting details as you tour the site. A short video tutorial explaining the functions of the app can be found here. There, you will also find links to your respective app store to download the app.
LIMES mobil - Regions
So far, content is available for the sections of the Limes along the Main River (between Stockstadt and Miltenberg), the Limes in Middle Franconia (between Ruffenhofen and Burgsalach), and for the Neustadt a.d. Donau-Einig region. It is worth checking back regularly, as new content is constantly being added and updated.
LIMES mobil International
The Limes is part of the international World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire”. This includes the Upper German-Raetian Limes as well as both Hadrian’s Wall and the Antonine Wall in Great Britain. For the Antonine Wall there already exists the aptly named “Antonine Wall” App. Additional national sections are currently being developed.
The foundations for the Limes Mobile App were developed in the Creative Europe Project “ALApp”. The project partners are Historic Environment Scotland, the State Office for the non-state Museums in Bavaria, the CDDV – Centre for Digital Documentation and Visualisation (Stirling, UK), and edufilm and media GmbH (Bad Bleiberg, AT). Many of the contents of LIMES mobil are sponsored by Bayerische Sparkassenstiftung.
You can find summarised information in the Flyer, or in a short profile in our Nachrichtenblatt 2020/2 (DER LIMES).
* The app is only partially compatible for use on tablets (and is sometimes not displayed at all in the app store on tablets). It was designed specifically for use on smartphone devices.
The German Limes Road app – Limes to go
The Upper German-Raetian Limes, the former outer border of the Roman Empire, runs through four German states and, at 550 kilometres long, is Europe’s largest archaeological monument. And yet, despite its size, with the help of the free “German Limes Road” app (available on both Android and iOS), travellers can have the entire Limes in their pocket.
Whether you are in Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria – travelling by car, bike or on foot – the app from the German Limes Road Association always has the relevant maps for your journey along the Limes at hand. Once downloaded, the maps can be used without any internet connection. Each map contains information about the sights from Roman times and beyond related to each member town of the German Limes Road Association. This allows travellers to discover all the Limes has to offer – from the course of the ancient border with its ramparts, watchtowers and forts which are still visible in the landscape today, to the many finds collected and presented in the museums along the Limes. The app also provides information about the watchtowers and forts which are no longer visible, further adding to the excitement of travelling along the Limes.
Background information on the Roman monuments and regarding their exploration by archaeologists and historians alike provides a deeper understanding of the Limes and its significance. Practical travel tips have also not been forgotten: those with e-bikes will find information on e-bike charging stations along the German Limes Cycle Route included in the map material. Travellers with a motorhome can also use the app to find out about campsites and spots to pitch their camper. In addition to the official Limes hiking trail, the app also shows other nature trails, trail loops, and walks that follow the traces of the Romans.
