39b. Welzheim East-Fort

Welzheim City, Rems-Murr-Kreis

Welzheim City, Rems-Murr-Kreis. So-called East-fort with reconstructed exterior wall gate in its original size. The fort is preserved as an archaeological park. Camp of the Ala Scubulorum  probably from the middle of the 2nd century AD. The excavations of the Reichs-Limeskommission at the end of the 19th century established the extent of the fort and the dimensions of the principia. Excavations in advance of overbuilding in the 1970’s to the 90’s provided information on details of the buildings and the internal structure of the installation.

The stone fort, with an area of 4.3 ha, is one of the largest forts on the Upper German Limes. It had a rectangular ground plan of c. 236 m x 181 m, and was surrounded by at least one ditch (additional ditches can thus far only be conjectured). Excavations and trial trenches have demonstrated four double-passageway gates at the mid-points of the sides, horseshoe-shaped towers in the corners and a few intermediate towers along the sides. The only internal stone building found so far is the central staff building, while excavations to date have demonstrated troop barracks and other buildings in timber construction.

The area of the fort lies today in a built-up region, which at the time of the Reichs-Limeskommission was still the undeveloped edge of the town. Small parts of the fort area are still meadowland. Above ground, no remains of the fort are still visible, apart from a marked section of the south wall. However, the modern Schorndorfer Strasse and Christian-Bauer-Strasse seem to record the course of the via principalis and the via praetoria. The vicus, which extended principally to the south and the east of the fort, is now heavily overbuilt. The locations of the fort baths and a burial ground are known.
